Hanging up the cleats

Volume 17, Issue 6 - page 31

"Hanging up the cleats" is a story about high school athletes quitting the sports they have played since childhood, and, for that very reason, this spread serves as a walk down memory lane. With photos spanning all ages and a scrapbook feel, this spread evokes the nostalgia of a childhood scrapbook as readers read the article. Additionally, the "cleats" font — a traditional high school letterman font — is a nod to many of the athletes featured in the story, who ended their careers in their senior year on varsity teams.

Shuffling through history

Volume 17, Issue 6 - Page 35

"Shuffling through history" was a blast to the past, returning avid sports fans and baseball-card collectors to their roots with vintage-styled baseball cards and baseball team logos. The prominent color of the font — red — serves as an allusion to the seams of a baseball. Additionally, the logos and the cards are dispersed throughout the page to create an element of asymmetry, balancing the spread with imbalance.

So far, sew good

Volume 17, Issue 4 - Page 11

"So far so good" is a spread that aims to achieve the look and feel of minimalist fashion magazines. With its limited color palette and dominant, human-focused images, this spread does just that, providing viewers with clean visuals without overwhelming them. Additionally, the large S on the front page serves to hook viewers in and mirrors the appearance of editorials.

Soaring into the future

Volume 17, Issue 4 - Page 15

“Soaring into the future” is a spread about flying cars and the future of transportation, but what better way to portray these advancements than with a throwback to the style of 1980s comic books? This juxtaposition, which uses bright colors, heavy line work, and strategically placed polka dots, captures the reader’s attention and encourages them to engage with the story, while also containing the nostalgic feel of the traditional comic book. Early on, this spread made an abrupt pivot to this style, as it was a great way to express the idea of flying cars in an out-of-the-box style without being restricted by previous conceptions of what they should look like.

Creating a home away from home

Volume 17, Issue 2 - page 17

“Creating a home away from home” was my introduction to my design career. Found in the December issue, this spread shares the stories of different San Francisco enclaves and is driven by three key colors – red, yellow, and green. Along with white accents and a predominantly black background, which serve to emphasize the key elements of each page, these colors are found throughout, allowing me to provide the reader with recurring motifs of China and Italy, the two countries mentioned in the text. As for the headline and subheadings, I opted for a 3D look to make them pop and draw the reader's attention, while also orienting them to the next section of text, each of which is based on a different culture.

Honorable Mention - Fall 2025

This layout places heavy emphasis on drawn elements, as seen throughout the spread, with the stack of books posing as an infographic and the book on the front page. Throughout the spread, I focused on evoking a lighthearted, welcoming style, one synonymous with a school library, as seen in my vibrant colors and playful fonts. The front color was especially a challenge, as the photo was too short to fill the entire page. As a result, I used my drawing to cover the bottom of the photo and the headline at the top to even out areas where the photo is lacking in size.

Seoul of the Streets

CTE Graphic Design - Zine

As a part of my CTE Graphic Design class, I was tasked with creating a zine. Although we were allowed to source our images from Google, we had to create the design and idea ourselves. I chose Korean Street Food because it is a significant part of my identity. I chose the primary color to be orange-red, as this is a color commonly found in Tteokbokki, one of the most popular street food dishes, and a font that replicates the style of Korean characters. The ads were also handmade and fake, as a part of the assignment was to create ads for your readers that had a relation to the topic of the zine.
